Mercedes-AMG announced the new GT SUV, its first electric SUV built in-house, from the ground up.来源 1

Earlier this year, Mercedes’ AMG performance brand grabbed our attention with the GT four-door coupe, a souped-up sports sedan with three axial flux motors delivering over 1,150 horsepower. Well, now meet its beefier cousin, the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, an equally powerful, ultra-fast-charging electric people-hauler. The AMG GT SUV (say that five times fast) marks the first time in the performance brand’s 59-year history that it has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house from the ground up. Scheduled to hit the US next summer, the new EV is built on Merc’s high-performance AMG.EA architecture to combine sports-car handling with full-size SUV suburban practicality. It will be available in three trims — GT 53, GT 55, and the flagship GT 63 — with the top model delivering 1,153hp via the same three axial flux motors powering the four-door coupe. That beats the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control, which is sure to make for some awkward run-ins around Stuttgart. Drivers can charge 10–80 percent in 12 minutes or gain up to 450km (around 280 miles) of WLTP range in just 10 minutes. The 128kWh battery trims will have an estimated max range of 435 miles. That battery, by the way? It utilizes F1-inspired technology with specialized NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes, and cylindrical cells. An electrically nonconductive oil flows directly around each individual cell for uniform thermal management, enabling continuous high-power delivery and long battery life. Mercedes has quietly been on the vanguard of battery technology for a while now, with the AMG GT SUV just the latest example. The 710kW charging speed, in particular, could give Mercedes another edge over Porsche’s 320kW speeds. For a full-size SUV, the AMG GT sounds like it could handle like a vehicle half its size. Mercedes-AMG replaced the traditional mechanical roll bars with a newly developed suspension that uses active hydraulic elements to eliminate pitch and roll during acceleration, heavy braking, and cornering. Combined with three-stage air springs and standard six-degree active rear-axle steering, it purports to balance track precision with long-distance comfort. But just because it’s a beefy lad doesn’t mean it’ll tip the scales. The AMG GT 63 SUV weighs in at 5,941lbs, making it slightly lighter than the Lotus Eletre R (6,007lbs) and Lucid Gravity (6,100lbs), and nearly identical to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric (5,960lbs). That means piping in recorded sounds of real AMGs — in this case, the legendary AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines — to preserve the “emotional” AMG identity. Mercedes is proud that it’s using real engine sounds over synthetic EV tones, though some may disagree. The system even simulates mechanical gear shifts with paddle controls, offers adjustable sound profiles, and integrates physical seat vibrations — so you can still feel like there’s a real engine under that hood instead of a 78-liter frunk. The so-called AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program is offered as standard across all three trims of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. Inside, you’ll find the MB.OS platform on your 14-inch display, with an army of AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google at your disposal to boss around. Use them to set navigation, discover random locations, do web searches, tell bad jokes, or whatever else people use AI for in their cars. Merc’s own onboard AI system can handle the physical stuff, like adjusting HVAC, changing drive modes, or fiddling with the lighting — all through voice commands. [Image: https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/26C0332_048.jpg?quality=90&strip=all] Beyond voice and navigation, the AMG GT SUV applies AI to high-performance track driving through something called the Predictive Performance Manager. Mercedes says the PPM uses track-mapping data to dynamically throttle or boost electric motor output depending on topography, conserving battery energy on downhill or technical winding sections so full power is available on steep inclines and long straights. That could also mean faster, more consistent overall lap times by eliminating battery overheating and power throttling during track driving — something an AMG lover would likely appreciate. Mercedes didn’t release the official pricing yet, though we can expect something closer to its official launch.来源 1

OpenAI, Meta, Google, and others are positioning AI agents as personal assistants that can perform a range of tasks online. But the web is becoming increasingly unfriendly toward agents, undermining their usefulness.来源 1
原文位置 218–5628
Autonomous agents are the hottest thing in AI. OpenAI, Meta, Google, Instinct, and others promise their agents can scour the internet on your behalf, doing anything from booking a dinner reservation and cleaning out your inbox to buying new shoes. But what happens when the rest of the internet won’t play nice? In recent weeks, users of services like Meta’s Muse, xAI’s Grok, OpenAI’s Dots, and Instinct have reported blocks preventing their AI agents from performing tasks across top websites. Yelp told TechCrunch that it only allows AI agents that pay for its data licensing program, while Delta Air Lines is preventing them from booking tickets on behalf of users. JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab have also confirmed that they’re blocking AI agents from accessing accounts due to security concerns. Some users say sites that previously worked with their AI agent are no longer accessible, including Cars.com and Amtrak, suggesting other companies could be quietly blocking them. Amazon was already fighting off AI agents last year when it banned Perplexity’s agentic shopping feature and sued the AI startup, raising legal and practical questions about the future of agents on the web. At the time, Amazon claimed it “repeatedly requested” that Perplexity stop allowing its AI agents to shop on its website, adding that third-party companies that purchase items on behalf of customers “should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate.” Perplexity responded by pointing out that Amazon doesn’t want AI agents roaming its platform because it won’t get as many human eyeballs in front of its ads — which is an actual issue for the ecommerce giant. The AI startup likened its AI agent to an extension of the user, arguing that Amazon “does not believe in your right to hire labor, to have an assistant or an employee acting on your behalf.” While a judge later ordered Perplexity to stop its AI agents from shopping on its website, an appeals court overturned this ruling in August. Amazon has since filed an amended complaint. This ongoing legal battle didn’t stop OpenAI, Meta, and Google from rolling out agents of their own. But they’re dealing with the same problems as Perplexity. Muse, Meta’s deceptively cute AI assistant, most recently faced the wrath of Amazon, which said its “continued access” violates its site policies. There are reports of xAI’s Grok, Instinct’s AI agent, and OpenAI’s Dots being unable to use Amazon as well. xAI owner Elon Musk responded by saying that maybe he “should start a competitor to Amazon.” The more places bots struggle to access, the greater the questions about how useful they are. “Does this impact the perceived value of the Anthropics and the OpenAIs? I would say absolutely,” Chris Canal, the CEO of the AI safety evaluator EquiStamp, tells The Verge. “One of the claims is that they’re going to permeate every aspect of our lives and be able to do anything that we could do online. If there are companies that are actively working to make that not happen, there are just fewer useful things the agents can do.” Meta responded to instances of websites blocking Muse in a post earlier this month. “Turning away a personal agent means turning away the customer behind it,” the company says. “We’d rather work with businesses to address the underlying concerns than see them lose that customer.” Instead of trying to fight Amazon, the company has partnered with retailers like Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Best Buy, and others, allowing Muse to shop on their sites. At the same time, Shopify has also opened its network of storefronts to AI agents. The Verge reached out to OpenAI and Google with requests for comments on the roadblocks their AI agents are facing but didn’t immediately hear back. Instinct declined to comment. Even if websites aren’t banning AI agents outright, agents may still be clashing with anti-bot systems, which have become ubiquitous across the web. Reports on Reddit suggest that Google is blocking some accounts that use Muse due to “suspicious activity,” while others have reported issues checking out on Walmart despite its Meta partnership. “There are all kinds of things that are set up not even to block agents, but to block in general bots or programs that are trying to scam or hack,” Canal adds. “These AI agents trigger those same safeguards.” The web architecture provider Cloudflare has also played a role in helping sites clamp down on unwanted AI visitors. After introducing a one-click block for AI crawlers in 2025, Cloudflare began blocking crawlers that simultaneously scrape websites for both search indexing and AI training. The move is part of Cloudflare’s efforts to save the web from an influx of AI bots, which is putting a strain on internet infrastructure and wreaking havoc on email inboxes, and which could eventually make it even harder than it already is to compete against bots when purchasing concert tickets, booking reservations, or trying to get ahold of certain products. While these blocks may help keep some AI agents and bots out of a website, Canal says they will ultimately make the web more “annoying” to use as more sites roll out interfaces to confirm you’re not a robot. “We could see them on a simple grocery shopping website soon, where you’re having to jump through a bunch of hoops to prove that you’re a human using the computer or your phone.”来源 1

The Apple HomeView’s simplified, hands-free instructions strip out much of what’s essential to online recipes.来源 1
原文位置 112–8540
When Apple revealed the HomeView to the world, it did so with an unusual ad for the company: Instead of pristine, polished tech in immaculate rooms, it’s a three-minute look at the messy, frantic morning routine of a family of five. Apple’s new smart display sits in the center of the chaos on the kitchen table, helping the family check their calendars, send messages, and pull up a French toast recipe in seconds, with simple, step-by-step instructions. The HomeView is just the latest in a long line of websites, browser extensions, and smart home gadgets with the same promise: that it can take an online recipe and strip it down to the essentials. Instead of scrolling a lengthy webpage that might range from helpful cooking instructions to seemingly irrelevant personal anecdotes, with the recipe itself way down at the bottom, you simply get ingredient lists, cooking instructions, and timers, all navigable hands-free with voice controls and Siri AI. No distractions, no unnecessary text, and no need to deal with a touchscreen while you’re wrist-deep in a chicken carcass. The appeal is obvious. There’s only one group of people likely to object: the food writers who created those recipes in the first place. I would know, since I’m one of them — I have my own food newsletter where I occasionally publish recipes, so I have a little skin in the game. The problem is that converting a recipe into easy-to-follow instructions in Apple’s own format also strips it of its context, including the ads and affiliate links that many recipe writers rely on for their income. Recipes may often be free to read, but they’re not free to create, and solutions like Apple’s remove the main ways websites and writers recoup those costs. “Tools that just extract the recipe,” Eater senior reporter Bettina Makalintal says, “break apart that unspoken social contract with recipe developers and audiences.” [Image: Apple pitches the HomeView as a hands-free cooking assistant. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Apple-HomeView-lifestyle-kitchen-261013.jpg?quality=90&strip=all] The online recipe landscape is a diverse place. Behemoths like Allrecipes and NYT Cooking host tens of thousands of recipes each, some from professional chefs and others from home cooks. Countless dedicated food publications run original recipe content, and thousands of independent chefs produce their own, across blogs, newsletters, YouTube accounts, and TikTok pages. While much of the writing on a recipe page may get on budding cooks’ nerves — we’ve all heard the jokes about being forced to read someone’s grandma’s life story before getting to their cookie recipe — it’s there for a reason. For one thing, it’s usually the only part of a recipe that a writer can copyright — the rest is regarded as mere instructions. But that extra writing is also there because before it worked so hard to strip the text out, Big Tech insisted on it. “Recipe writers needed to pad out the text in a certain way so that their recipes would have a chance of coming up in a Google search,” Makalintal explains. The good news for recipe writers is that Apple’s approach guarantees at least one visit to their original web page. To load a recipe onto the HomeView screen you have to first open it either on your iPhone or through Safari on the HomeView itself, ensuring you’ll see its ads at least once. That’s welcome, but for website owners it’s still a lot less valuable than the repeated ad impressions that come from someone scrolling down the page and staying on it while they cook. "“Nearly every food blog has a ‘jump to recipe’ button right up at the top, so you don’t actually have to scroll. So if you’re still out here complaining about these essays, you’re just an asshole.”" - Jaya Saxena It’s not just bad for the writers, either — readers and home cooks may be missing out too. “The additional information around recipes can sometimes be really helpful when it comes to troubleshooting problems that could come up while cooking or addressing things like ingredient swaps,” says Makalintal. Apple’s simplified steps may make some recipes easier to follow, but others might become harder without crucial context included elsewhere on the page. And as common as gripes about recipe intros are, they’ve long been easy to skip if you really insist. “Nearly every food blog has a ‘jump to recipe’ button right up at the top, so you don’t actually have to scroll,” says Jaya Saxena, one of the founder-owners of the food website Ravenous. “So if you’re still out here complaining about these essays, you’re just an asshole.” [Image: Amazon’s Echo Show devices have long had similar recipe features, but powered by partner publishers. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/chorus/uploads/chorus_asset/file/22324183/dseifert_210219_4433_0002.jpg?quality=90&strip=all] Apple is far from the first company to attempt to streamline online recipes. In 2021 startup Recipeasly promised to “fix” online recipes by removing the ads and “life stories.” It barely lasted a weekend before online backlash forced its founders to take it offline. Bigger tech companies have been able to plow through that resistance. Amazon’s Echo Show displays offer similar hands-free cooking features to the HomeView’s, though only with partner sites like Allrecipes or Epicurious. Google’s Nest Hubs used to as well, though Google ultimately removed the step-by-step recipe feature from its Nest Hubs in 2024, along with other “underutilized” features. Apple’s approach, which it says will work with any online recipe that uses Google’s search-friendly recipe formatting, is unique among the current smart home hubs. Perhaps most egregious of all, Google Search now uses Gemini AI to amalgamate online recipes, presenting a streamlined version right on the search page, saving users from ever needing to click through to the original sources at all. Saxena says that for established writers, this is “more like a continuation of the threats they’ve already seen.” Unless Apple sells vast quantities of HomeView displays, its recipe function is still likely to be used by far fewer people than Google’s AI search recipes, let alone recipes from other AI assistants and tools, which are also more egregious in how they take advantage of online content. “I would put the threat level below AI summaries,” says Makalintal, because their “opaque” sourcing “really is erasing labor.” Some major recipe platforms might be able to reduce the impact by getting on board. While the HomeView doesn’t have its own app store, it does support casting apps to the screen using the same tech as CarPlay. That means big apps like Allrecipes or NYT Cooking will have the option of presenting content on the HomeView on their own terms. Independent writers are unlikely to be able to do the same. For them, the choice remains as it has for some time: Stick it out with ever-diminishing Google traffic and ad revenue; take on more sponsored content and paid-for recipes with big brands; or move to a paywall or newsletter business model. Smaller recipe developers are turning to Substack, says Makalintal, where it’s easy to lock recipes behind a paywall. I’m one of them — on my newsletter I restrict my recipes to paid subscribers, a reflection of the fact that they’re the most time-consuming articles I publish. I’ve asked Apple how the HomeView recipe tool will handle paywalled recipes, but at the time of publishing haven’t gotten an answer. But the move en masse to newsletter platforms “has led to some subscription fatigue among home cooks,” Makalintal says, and few cooks will start a paid subscription to access a single recipe, suggesting it’s not likely to support the whole industry. Some version of paid-for content may be the only answer going forward, though, for creators both big and small. Tech companies like Apple will have to grapple with how their tools work when access to free content gets trickier, and the rest of us may have to get used to paying for recipes again. “A good, creative recipe that has been tested to ensure it really works takes time and effort and money,” Saxena says. “It is a real skill to communicate how something is made when you’re not physically with that person, and buying all the ingredients needed to test things multiple times is expensive. People should probably be more comfortable paying for that.”来源 1

The Guardian understands ministers plan to overhaul Labour’s apprenticeship funding scheme to increase the cost of training by 25% for a worker over the age of 25 in order to encourage businesses to train young people instead.来源 1

Aiming to reverse a 40% drop in youth apprenticeship starts over the past decade, the proposal is being developed as part of the government response to Alan Milburn’s review into why so many young people are out of work.来源 1

Following the proposed change, money from the pot would still be available to cover eligible training costs for apprentices aged 16 to 24. However, for older apprentices, the funds would cover only 75% of the cost and employers would need to pay for the remainder. It is believed the measure is under consideration for a phased launch from the start of the next academic year, in September 2027.来源 1

"For now, our view is that we can sustain this growth at least through next year," Lee told CNBC on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok. "That's because the gap between demand and supply for semiconductors is still very wide, and supply is still being expanded."来源 1

Just ahead of the wider release of Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary, TikTok has banned the film’s social media account from its platform. TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, was informed Friday afternoon that a “permanent suspension” was imminent. Bleecker Street has not yet responded to a request for comment from The Verge. While TikTok has no official affiliation with Elon Musk, part owner Larry Ellison appears in the film via a text message offering to help Musk fund his Twitter purchase. Last month, YouTube, Meta, X, and TikTok all faced backlash for rejecting ads for the film. YouTube and Google quickly reversed course, calling it an “error.” However, TikTok and X have refused to change their stance, and neither platform has allowed paid advertisements for the film. Banning the documentary’s account, however, marks a serious escalation, and one laced with a dash of irony — shortly before the account was removed, it posted that people should see the movie “before it gets shut down.” [Image: The irony. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/Muskpost.webp?quality=90&strip=all]来源 1
