Building a PC or buying electronic components for your devices is becoming more expensive. A 32-gigabyte Corsair computer memory kit cost $52 on Amazon's US page in June 2025. By September 2026, the same kit was selling for $250, an increase of about 380 per cent. And it is not only RAM that is affected. An analysis by The National of Amazon US prices for 18 popular memory and storage products found that every one had risen by between 85 per cent and 553 per cent. A Crucial 1TB SSD (Solid State Drive) went from $100 to $392, while a Corsair DDR5 memory kit, used in many newer gaming PCs, jumped from $125 to $550. For years, building your own PC from scratch gave some users much-needed control over performance and price. One could spend more on the parts that mattered, keeping those that still worked and upgrading over time. However, rising component prices are making that harder, as much of the process is enabled by memory and storage chips. The reason behind this? The AI industry is becoming insatiably reliant on memory chips. Many are calling the surging cost phenomeonon 'chipflation'. Manufacturers that supply everyday consumer electronics are increasingly serving the AI industry, whose biggest customers are committing billions of dollars to new computing capacity. Two types of chips are causing prices to soar; both are sought after by consumers and the artificial intelligence industry. DRAM provides the working memory that computers and phones use to run applications. NAND flash stores files in SSDs, memory cards and other devices. AI infrastructure needs both. One particularly valuable product is high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which supplies data to the powerful processors running AI models. HBM chips are a specialised form of DRAM. And now manufacturers must decide how to divide production capacity and investment between products. Larger AI contracts and long-term pay cheques are giving memory makers a strong incentive to prioritise AI needs over consumer products. The consultancy group Bain says the shift is already “worsening shortages and raising the prices of smartphones and PCs”. The five largest cloud companies could spend $780 billion on infrastructure this year, nearly five times the amount they did three years ago. HBM chip sales have risen from about $4 billion in 2023 to an estimated $77 billion this year. This, in turn, has reversed years of falling prices in the industry. Even hard drives, which store data on spinning disks rather than on memory chips, have become more expensive since 2023. In October 2025, OpenAI announced partnerships with Samsung and SK Hynix for its Stargate data centre initiative, outlining plans targeting up to 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month. This represented future demand and capacity expansion, rather than memory immediately removed from the consumer market. A month later, Samsung raised prices for some memory chips by as much as 60 per cent compared with September. The pressure became apparent at the retail level almost immediately. We analysed Keepa data, which tracks historical prices across most Amazon.com products. What we found was that Amazon.com had Corsair’s DDR5 kit available for only 11 to 21 per cent of the time between November 2025 and February 2026, compared with availability throughout the previous summer. In the UAE, 11 of 14 storage products tracked on Sharaf DG’s website were listed as out of stock on October 1, including every internal SSD in the sample. "Memory manufacturers are allocating more production capacity towards high-margin server products, including the memory required for AI infrastructure. The capacity continues to move towards server applications, leaving less available for conventional PC DRAM," Kevin Sebastian, a creative director and technology commentator in the UAE, tells The National. "Storage is being squeezed too NAND flash is the technology behind SSDs, USB storage and many memory cards, and it has experienced its own sharp price increases." For decades, gamers, video editors, and other demanding users have often chosen each computer component separately to tailor their computers to their needs. Replacing individual parts can also extend their computers' lives. But the savings depend on what those parts cost. Large PC manufacturers may have some protection through existing contracts, while individual builders pay current retail prices. That raises the possibility that a pre-built computer could offer better value than an equivalent machine assembled from parts purchased separately. This, of course, will still depend on the specifications, the retailer and when the components were bought. Higher RAM and SSD prices alone do not establish that building a PC is now more expensive in every case. The same calculation applies to people trying to extend the life of an older machine. An upgrade may still cost less than a replacement computer, but rising component prices can narrow the savings. Consumers may consequently spend more, accept lower specifications or hold on to devices longer. Which is what PC builders in the UAE are going through now - and the figures are eye-watering and budget-busting. During the first half of 2025, a decent 32GB DDR5-6000 kit could be bought anywhere from Dh400 and Dh500 in the UAE, while archived search results on Amazon UAE show several 32GB DDR5 kits at Dh400 to Dh520, according to data compiled by Kevin Sebastian, a creative director and technology commentator in the UAE. A Dubai gaming community PC build from April 2025 listed a Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5 kit at Dh449. Today, prices are unrecognisable: current listings show 32GB DDR5 modules and kits exceeding Dh2,000, including a Kingston Fury Beast 32GB DDR5-6000 module at around Dh2,250. And while some higher-end Kingston kits have been listed above Dh3,000 on sites such as Microless and Amazon, it is still possible to get them at a lower price, but they are few and far between, and are still well about Dh2,000. Even prices for made-for-the-masses SD cards have jumped: a SanDisk Extreme 256GB microSD card currently sits around Dh190 to Dh280, compared to Dh120 to Dh150 a year earlier. "That’s just how distorted the market has become ... a component that could comfortably occupy less than 10 per cent of a mid-range gaming PC budget last year can now consume a much larger share of it," Mr Sebastian tells The National. Graphic cards have also been hit, primarily because each one carries several gigabytes of fast memory. Prices of GDDR6 and GDDR7 chips used in graphics cards rose by several hundred per cent within months of AI data centres absorbing supply. The effect is starkest at the top end. Nvidia’s flagship RTX 5090 was launched in January 2025 at $1,999. By July 2026 it was listed at about $4,329 on Amazon US, more than double. In the UAE, some RTX 5090 listings now range from Dh25,000 to Dh30,000, "Imagine a retailer bought a shipment of RAM at Dh400 per kit; normally it could add its margin and sell those kits relatively cheaply. If replacing that inventory now costs Dh1,200 or Dh1,500, selling the remaining stock at the old price makes much less financial sense," Mr Sebastian says. "Retailers therefore have to decide whether to increase prices immediately, reduce margins or risk being unable to restock the product. That is one reason consumers can see enormous differences between shops and even between two models with very similar specifications." Meanwhile, some chipmakers are reporting record earnings. Micron reported quarterly revenue of $54.2 billion, about 4.8 times the level a year earlier. Its operating margin climbed from 32 per cent to almost 81 per cent. Samsung’s memory business also reported strong profits, even as its mobile phone division recorded its first operating loss, partly linked to rising component costs. Investors have rewarded the chipmakers even more. Shares in SanDisk, spun off from Western Digital in February 2025, have risen almost 38 times since the end of June 2025. Kioxia's shares are up about 20 times. Both specialise in the NAND chips used for storage. Meanwhile, IDC expects global PC shipments to fall 11.3 per cent this year and average prices to rise 18.3 per cent. That average reflects both prices and the mix of computers sold. Some SSD prices have eased from their highs, but expanding supply takes time. Deloitte estimates new factories may not add meaningful capacity until 2029 or 2030. Bain's report goes on to describe the market shift as “structural, not cyclical”. That does not mean prices cannot fall, but it raises a longer-term question about whom manufacturers build their capacity for. For now, an industry racing to build the next generation of AI is making some everyday technology more expensive to maintain.来源 1

Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, and Vodafone signed a letter of intent saying they’re considering a joint bid for spectrum that would support European direct-to-device satellite competition for SpaceX’s Starlink. The four telecom companies say they would handle the ground infrastructure while a separate, unannounced satellite partner provides the satellite constellation: > The joint initiative by Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone has a clear ambition: to meet customer demand for universal coverage in underserved areas, strengthen the resilience of public networks, protect critical communications, and support the development of a European constellation. > As part of the project, the four operators plan to establish key ground network infrastructure as well as critical coordination and monitoring functions in Europe, without investing directly in a satellite constellation. This will be provided by a satellite partner still to be selected. > The partnership between the MNO-led initiative and the satellite operator would combine European governance and market access with proven satellite technology and deployment expertise. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announced their own collaboration in the US earlier this year that would combine spectrum in rural areas and dead zones “to increase capacity, improve the customer experience, and help satellite providers reach more customers through a unified platform.” In May, the EU said it was considering a plan to reserve some of the 2 GHz band for local companies to offer satellite services, an idea that SpaceX has criticized, claiming it would worsen service in Ukraine, reports FT.来源 1

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Moscow targeted electricity and oil and gas facilities 76 times in the week since Donald Trump announced a supposed "energy ceasefire".On Monday, he said "more than 10 energy infrastructure facilities were damaged, and the lights went out for at least 550,000 families" after attacks overnight.Kyiv says it initially held off responding in kind but has since resumed its own strikes.Last winter, Russian strikes knocked out power and heating in sub-zero temperatures. As the big freeze approaches again, Ukraine is racing to make sufficient repairs to the battered grid in time.Rolling power cuts are one way of easing pressure but there is no quick fix.The World Bank said in February that the long-term bill to restore Ukraine's energy sector is estimated at about $91 billion. Some $4.9 billion is needed for urgent repairs this year alone. With no let-up in attacks, Olena Pavlenko, head of the DiXi Group energy think-tank, said that figure could well be an underestimate."I am sure that with the level of attacks and destruction, the number just for 2026 will be around $6-7 billion," she told AFP.- 'Destroyed' -Kyiv city is served by three combined heat and power (CHP) plants with a total generation capacity of some 1.3 gigawatts, according to Global Energy Monitor, an NGO.Mayor Vitali Klitschko said this month that the city's capacity to generate electricity had been "destroyed", despite repairs since last winter."Information about the level of damaged capacity is not publicly available but we assume that most of the CHPs are fully destroyed again," said Pavlenko."Distributed generation will not be enough to cover the needs. The city team and government still have some time to repair the facilities before the temperature drops."But in case of another attack, the situation will repeat."Kyiv's hulking CHPs date back to the 1970s and 1980s during Soviet times, and the stock of replacement parts to patch up damage is running low.Power company DTEK said on October 1 that its thermal power plants have been attacked more than 230 times since the start of the conflict.Vitalii Zaichenko, from grid operator Ukrenergo, said last week that recent ballistic-missile and drone strikes have made energy workers' jobs "significantly more difficult"."Having previously targeted high-voltage substations and generation facilities, the enemy has now shifted to directly attacking high-voltage transmission lines," he explained.Quickly arranging back-up power is "extremely difficult", and the networks of distribution companies are also being targeted.Air raid alerts, which sound around the clock and can last hours, complicate repairs, he added. In Kyiv, which is home to some three million people, Zelensky has openly criticised Klitschko for the pace of winter contingency planning. But the mayor insists that back-up plans will be in place, with generators provided at schools and medical facilities for light, heating and hot water.- Decentralisation -The International Energy Agency (IEA) watchdog has said that Ukraine had about 38 GW of generating capacity before Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.But nearly five years of war has seen that dramatically slashed, although the current generating capacity remains unclear.Currently, Ukraine's three still-operational nuclear power stations are supplying more than 55 percent of the country's total electricity production.Decentralising energy provision through local generation, battery energy storage, microgrids and cogeneration have all been proposed to boost the supply, but time is not on Ukraine's side.A lack of stable electricity in the grid has already seen the temporary suspension of Kyiv's Metro system and there are fears that water supplies could also be hit."If there's no electricity in the city, there'll be no water," said Sergii Gorkutsenko, deputy chief executive of Kyivvodokanal, the city's main water supply provider.Limiting power through planned cuts or emergency outages will hit the utility's ability to pump water, including to high-rise apartment blocks, he told epravda.com recently.Kyiv residents have already seen their taps run dry and this, plus the ability to take away wastewater, is causing public health fears."If there's no sewage, in three days there'll be an epidemiological catastrophe," said Gorkutsenko.来源 3

Independent lawmaker Helen Haines, 65, underwent surgery overnight but remains in critical condition after being struck deliberately by a car in an attack that “does shake all of us”, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Tuesday.National broadcaster ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald reported she had lost a leg.A man, 43, is in custody after Haines was hit outside her office in the town of Wangaratta, just over 200 kilometres northeast of Melbourne.Police described it as an isolated incident with the motive under investigation by the counter-terrorism team.Acts of political violence are rare in Australia, and Albanese told the national broadcaster he wanted the country to remain a place where lawmakers can engage with people, go shopping, and watch football. But he said security needed to be “dealt with” amid a significant increase in threats.Australia’s Human Rights Commission said the attack happened “against a backdrop of increasing polarisation and threats against politicians”, which could undermine democracy.Threats against Australian lawmakers and electorate offices doubled between 2021 and 2025, with 1,067 incidents reported to police last year. The Australian Federal Police formed a National Security Investigations team last October, described by police commissioner Krissy Barrett as a “flying squad of hate disruptors”, resulting in 41 people being charged for threats against federal politicians, ministers, and the prime minister.Just this month, three men were charged by police over separate threats to politicians and government officials, and another three were sentenced by courts. The nation’s spy chief, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation director-general Mike Burgess, warned last year politically motivated violence was among the agency’s fastest growing security concerns, driven by “grievance narratives, conspiracies and online echo chambers”.Political intolerance, violent rhetoric and polarisation were also contributing to a “permissive environment of violence”, Burgess said on Tuesday.Australia’s Human Rights Commission said the attack happened “against a backdrop of increasing polarisation and threats against politicians” which could undermine democracy. The lawmakers targeted are across the political spectrum and include men.But the nature of threats directed at female lawmakers is “particularly troubling” because they are targeted because they are women, the federal police said last year. The University of Melbourne’s associate head of psychological sciences, Lisa Phillips, said she was not surprised it was a female lawmaker who had been attacked.Victoria’s state parliament commissioned Phillips to survey lawmakers on online abuse and stalking five years ago.“The female politicians who responded almost ubiquitously reported experiences of either unwanted approaches, persistent unwanted contact from people, or experiences of threats or of assault,” she told AFP.Eighty-five percent of the threats received by the Victorian women lawmakers were gender-based abuse, the study found. The attack on Haines may not be linked to federal politics, Phillips added.“If you have a grievance against the system, you don’t care which part of the system you are targeting.”来源 1
